1996Mewtwo belongs to Japan's original Expansion Pack, the set that launched the Pokémon Card Game on 20 October 1996. The reference shown here has the printed rarity star. That detail distinguishes it from the separate no-rarity printing and matters when matching both the artwork and its market history.
Ken Sugimori's Mewtwo stands against a radiating purple and blue holo background. Its compact rules text captures two sides of the Pokémon: Psychic punishes an opponent for attaching more Energy, while Barrier trades an Energy card for protection. With its yellow border, Level 53 and 60 HP, it preserves the visual language of the game's beginning.
